On the evening of the 4th of September 2014, the DOVS played host to the most recent roundtable discussion of the Philippine Society of Ocular Plastics and Reconstructive Surgery (PSOPRS). Dinner was followed by a scientific program composed of a lecture on Botulinum toxin (Botox) applications for oculoplastics by Dr. Alexander D. Tan, and three case discussions by medical staff from various Manila training institutions. With Allergan Philippines' generous support, the almost 10 consultant fellows of the Society and dozens of residents from training institutions in attendance were also treated to live demonstrations of Botox injections - not just for actual patients of the Plastic-Lacrimal service of the PGH, but also with a number of free injections made available for cosmetic therapy.
The roundtable discussion then followed, with three speakers sharing clinical experiences, pearls, and insights. Dr. Charisse Ann Sanchez, DPBO, Plastic-Lacrimal and Orbit Service Fellow of the PGH had a discussion on Intralesional Corticosteroids in Orbital Vascular Malformations without Communication, touching upon theoreticals and clinical insights. Single cases of orbital tumors were discussed by Dr. Francis Ryan Collantes, chief resident of the Manila Doctors Hospital Department of Ophthalmology, (optic glioma in an 8 y/o male who came in with a 6 year history of gradual axial proptosis), and, Dra. Pipay Acebedo, resident of the Department of Ophthalmology of the Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center.
A regular activity of the PSOPRS, the DOVS/SOJR was fortunate for the opportunity to be part of efforts to foster the advancement of knowledge and skills in subspecialty sciences through interactions between leaders in the field and physicians-in-training.
