The DOVS website would like to provide an online presence to one of its academic outputs - the publication Self-Instructional Materials in Ophthalmology. A second edition published in 2012, its first edition was produced in 2005 with assistance from the international aid agency of the Kingdom of Spain, Cooperacion Espanola, to coincide with the opening of the Sentro Oftalmologico Jose Rizal.
It is a key reference for the medical students of the University of the Philippines College of Medicine rotating in the Department. It is a concise collection of basic and clinical science principles in ophthalmology, with inclusion of subspecialty topics meant to aid rotators maximize their exposure as they participate in courses offered by the Department, and join in patient care.
Editor and Pediatric Ophthalmologist / Strabismus specialist Dr. Marissa Valbuena and Assistant Editor and Uveitis specialist Dr. Teresita R. Castillo have collaborated in this update; its content and design benefitting from their experiences as faculty members and previous administrators of the University of the Philippine College of Medicine (UPCM) - Philippine General Hospital System. Consultants of the DOVS - who have served as instructors and professors in the UPCM, and, as past and present leaders in various specialty and subspecialty societies of the Philippine Academy of Ophthalmology - have stayed on as contributors in the book's many sections.
