The First Basic Course in Phacoemulsification held in the SOJR-DOVS pushed through successfully last March 22-23, 2014. Aimed at furthering skills of all eye surgeons, the multi-modality program was enjoyed by a mix of consultants and residents in training. Four live surgeries by alumni Drs. Noel Carino, Richard Kho and Rainier Covar annotated by faculty and staff of the DOVS were witnessed by the participants. Lectures on theoreticals behind the intervention were given by faculty covering the whole gamut of considerations at the pre-, intra-, and post-operative stages. Through the generous support of sponsors, wet labs using bovine eyes were done in the complex on Day 2, in which participants managed to handle the actual phaco machines paired with various operating microscopes offered by local ophthalmic device providers.
