See you all again in the following post-grad events by the Ophthalmology Residents' Alumni Association and the Sentro Oftalmologico Jose Rizal!
The DOVS and Alumni Association thank all the 140 attendees and many sponsors for supporting the 4th Basic Course in Phacoemulsification! We give special thanks also to the seven amazing surgeons, thirteen generous lecturers, twelve discussion facilitators, as well as supportive staff. Our generous sponsors also deserve particular thanks - as our participants were able to avail of various surgical items on sale, witness surgeries done with more than five different cataract-related machines, and, subsequently, do wet labs with them. See you all again in the following post-grad events by the Ophthalmology Residents' Alumni Association and the Sentro Oftalmologico Jose Rizal!

With the generous support of Microlab Philippines/Zeiss, residents of the DOVS carried out a phaco cataract surgery series using astigmatism-correcting intraocular lens implants last December 10, 2016.
With the guidance of cataract service chief Dr. Richard Kho, ten (10) surgeries were completed by DOVS residents and fellows. More recent and ever more precise pre- and intraoperative interventions were employed - specifically, pre-operative planning using Zeiss and Barrett Toric Calculators, with use of Callisto-Lumera computer-assisted surgical systems - to implant Zeiss Toric IOL's. These interventions - which correct for astigmatism/fine errors of refraction that otherwise may subtract from optimal post-operative vision - represent further advances in the treatment of cataracts. Other in-house equipment (both donated and purchased) were also used, all within the Sentro Operating Room Complex constructed with the aid of the Kingdom of Spain. Such activities and collaborations expedite the general public's access to better standards of care. The DOVS/SOJR is again honored and thankful for this opportunity to collaborate and serve - and in the process advance the art and science of the practice in our nation. We congratulate graduating residents Marianne Cena and Antonio Niccolo D. Agustin for recognition given to their research output. They won second and third prize respectively in both the Philippine General Hospital Residents Research Forum (Experimental Category, 08 November 2016) and, the 30th Academy Residents' Research Paper Contest (Clinical Paper Category, 23 November 2016).
Dr. Cena's paper was entitled "The effect of punctal plugs on dry eye symptoms among glaucoma patients maintained on topical anti-glaucoma medications." With consultants Drs. Noel Carino and Nilo FlorCruz II, she investigated if punctal plugs can improve dry eye symptoms among glaucoma patients being maintained on topical glaucoma medications. Results showed an improvement in dry eye signs and symptoms across multiple test modalities, demonstrating their potential usefulness in dry eye treatment among glaucoma patients. Dr. Agustin's paper was entitled "The comparison of clinical efficacy of topical azithromycin therapy versus oral doxycycline on the treatment of Meibomian gland dysfunction." With Dr. Ruben Lim Bon Siong, the efficacy and safety of eye drops was examined, representing initial steps towards finding ever more convenient modalities for MGD treatment. Research continues to be a core pillar of the DOVS and SOJR, for both purposes of creating competent specialists and contributing to the community. Please communicate with us through the forms/email entries provided should you be interested in further details on these studies, or, any other matters pertaining to study and research. Incremental additions to follow, including Residents' Research Presentation awardees. Don't miss the video of our proud second place fellowship night presentation at https://youtu.be/f9ONL6ghH18 , which allowed only one point of separation from the thrilling first placers, East Avenue Medical Center. Unless otherwise mentioned, photos are by Dr. Tonicci Paulino, Y2 resident. Hanggang sa muli. Padayon! Dr. Paulita Pamela Pantig-Astudillo, past DOVS Chief Resident and Pediatric Ophthalmology Fellow facilitated the donation of a RetCam II camera from The Hospital for Sick Children/SickKids of Toronto, where she completed an additional post-residency fellowship. The trial proceeded last November 14, 2016 at the sOJR.
The camera enhances the imaging and documentation capabilities of any center. Valuable in a wide range of clinical settings, it has a special value in documenting eye diseases of Filipino children such as intraocular tumors. Characterization and continued care of these potentially life-threatening diseases are made more precise with this instrument, It also has the potential to enhance care of patients with diseases that lead to preventable blindness, such as retinopathy of prematurity. This donation also demonstrates the potential for exchanges across peoples and institutions to improve lives across borders and seas. The DOVS stands proudly with The Hospital for Sick Children in its commitment to a bright and better future for sick kids, wherever they may be, and be from. PGH-DOVS/SOJR services are offered to the general public; it is a component of the National University Hospital. Where diagnostics and therapy are reimbursable by Philhealth, benefits may be fully applied. For most services, fees are tiered based on ability to pay, with a network of medical foundations able to provide assistance in situations of indigency. Referrals from other institutions and practitioners are most welcome. The DOVS fully intends to maximize the outputs of these instruments, and in doing so, serve the largest possible number of Filipinos. This, and most acquisitions for this year came through the persistence and dedication of members of the previous administration team of the Hospital and Sentro, with Dr. Raul Cruz at the helm in the SOJR, and Dr. Jose Gonzales at the PGH. Funded by the General Appropriations of the national government, it represents recognition of health as a priority of the nation and people; it is a welcome demonstration of health sector growth vis-a-vis incremental gains and successes in recent times. We invite those of the public in need to reach out to us if this or any other service listed in the website may help you with your condition, or, if we may collaborate on any endeavor of research, training, or service. The DOVS mourns the passing of Dra. Gloria D. Lim. May her service and leadership in the University, Department, and Ophthalmology community always inspire succeeding generations to reach for the aspirations of her alma mater demonstrated in her life - of honor, and excellence.
