We congratulate graduating residents Marianne Cena and Antonio Niccolo D. Agustin for recognition given to their research output. They won second and third prize respectively in both the Philippine General Hospital Residents Research Forum (Experimental Category, 08 November 2016) and, the 30th Academy Residents' Research Paper Contest (Clinical Paper Category, 23 November 2016).
Dr. Cena's paper was entitled "The effect of punctal plugs on dry eye symptoms among glaucoma patients maintained on topical anti-glaucoma medications." With consultants Drs. Noel Carino and Nilo FlorCruz II, she investigated if punctal plugs can improve dry eye symptoms among glaucoma patients being maintained on topical glaucoma medications. Results showed an improvement in dry eye signs and symptoms across multiple test modalities, demonstrating their potential usefulness in dry eye treatment among glaucoma patients.
Dr. Agustin's paper was entitled "The comparison of clinical efficacy of topical azithromycin therapy versus oral doxycycline on the treatment of Meibomian gland dysfunction." With Dr. Ruben Lim Bon Siong, the efficacy and safety of eye drops was examined, representing initial steps towards finding ever more convenient modalities for MGD treatment.
Research continues to be a core pillar of the DOVS and SOJR, for both purposes of creating competent specialists and contributing to the community. Please communicate with us through the forms/email entries provided should you be interested in further details on these studies, or, any other matters pertaining to study and research.
